We’re doing things a little differently this year and using a rating system based on the PDGA’s.  When you play a round, your performance in compared to that of the propagators.  Your rating is calculated from their PDGA rating, their performance, and your performance.

Columns:

  1. Rating: this is the average rating of your top 10 rounds.
  2. Tier:
    • If you have played less than 15 rounds, this is based on your current rating and your tier will be in grey italics. Future rounds may change your tier.
    • If you have played 15 or more rounds, this is based on your rating after round 15 and your tier will be bolded and black. You are locked into this tier for the rest of the season.
  3. FT Points: Final Tournament (FT) Points are the points that are brought forward from the league into the tournament. It’s calculated from your rating, which
    • Final Tournament (FT) Points are calculated using your rating and the league’s average SSA for the season. They are directly proportional to your rating.
    • Your FT Points will change as your rating changes. It’s locked in for the final tournament.
    • Your tournament score will be FT Points + round 1 score + round 2 score.
    • Lower is better.
  4. Player: green players are propagators. Their performance (and PDGA rating) determines the rating of all players in the round.
  5. Dated columns (e.g., 05-17, 05-24, etc.): white boxes are in your top 10 and grey are discarded.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are ratings calculated?

The performance of the propagators are used to set the baseline for performance, and players are compared to this baseline.

More specifically, the performance of the propagators are used to determine the Scratch Scoring Average (SSA), which is the expected number of throws by a 1000-rated player. Each throw over this subtracts 17 points (Rundle Park) or 13 points (Leduc, Beaumont).

Why did I get a lower rating with a better score?

Your rating is based on your performance compared to other players (specifically, the propagators). If you threw 2 better than normal and the propagators threw 3 better (on average), then you’ll see a worse rating.

What is a propagator?

The rating system for EDGA is based on the PDGA’s rating system, and the propagators for a round are all of the players with a PDGA rating.  Due to attendance, the propagators usually change from round to round.

Propagators are used as a baseline to determine relative performance. If you played better, was it due to conditions or was it due to improved skill? We can determine this by comparing your performance to that of the propagators. I.e.:

  • If it’s a great day with little wind and nice thermals, the propagators will play better, which raises the bar for everyone.
  • If it’s windy and rainy, then the propagators will play worse, which lowers the bar for everyone.

Why use ratings?

We want to encourage participation on windy and rainy days. In the past, a lot of players would skip when the weather was bad because they would throw worse than normal and would have no chance of bettering their score. By making the ratings relative to the performance of other players, we want to compensate for the conditions and make those bad weather days worth playing.

I have a question or I’ve spotted an error in my scores. Who do I talk to?

You can post on Facebook or use the contact form on the site, which goes straight to the IT Department.  We want to make the results as correct as possible and we welcome any reports of incorrect scores, misspelled names, or other errors.

Please be polite, as we’re volunteers doing our best with imperfect data; some cards are hard to read, the sums on the cards are often incorrect, and names can get misspelled.

Will we be doing this next year?

That will depend on the decision of the board.

We had a rough start and a lot of growing pains, and we’re mostly through those. On the pro side, the idea of making every round count is a good one. On the con side, the rating system is more complicated and there is ill will toward it.

I don’t like the way we did it this year. What can I do?

The AGM is right after Rundle’s finale tournament on September 15th. That’s the best place to be heard and to get involved.

We’ve heard a lot of strong opinions this year and we’re hoping that passion will manifest at the meeting. We’re always looking for capable people with the drive and the time to help out.
